First, expect to have lots of fun!   Also expect that not all will make sense at first, because Jiu Jitsu is a very intricate art with lots of detail.  Over a period, however, all the drills and techniques will provide a bigger picture with regards to Jiu Jitsu as sport and self-defence.  A typical class structure will look as follows:

  • Warmups: Which include individual based body movement drills as well as partner-based drills.
  • Technique drilling: Drilling specific techniques to get an automatic response in the situation where such technique is needed.   Drilling is also puzzled together to provide a flow of movement that will familiarise students to certain dynamic scrambling positions as well as certain stationary positions.
  • Submission grappling: We encourage our students to grapple with one another in the latter part of the sessions to apply what has been taught, but also to get used to the pressure of a real fighting situation.

For Jiu Jitsu a proper fitting Brazilian Jiu Jitsu or judo Gi with a t-shirt of rash vest underneath the Gi top.  Some students also prefer tights under the Gi pants, however that is personal preference.

For Nogi grappling and women’s self-defence shorts or tights with a T-shirt or rash guard

For kickboxing shorts or tights and a T shirt or sports top.

For kickboxing classes you will need a mouthguard, and an athletic cup for men, boxing gloves and MMA gloves. The gym has extra gloves and some sparring equipment, although we would recommend purchasing your own. If you want to spar, headgear and shin guards are also highly recommended.

For Jiu Jitsu a BJJ Gi will be required once you have decided that it is for you.   Generally, a good quality Judo Gi can also work, however the cut of both Gi’s are not the same and therefor a BJJ GI is the best option.

Lastly a rash guard for Nogi grappling if the club does decide that some classes will be without the Gi.

We can order equipment if you need, or we will advise you where to buy equipment if you ask for advice.

Yes. If you can only come to class occasionally, you can pay per session.

We can provide self-defence courses; however, our view is that short term training is not optimal, and we advise that training is done on a regular basis to create a good foundation for self-defence.

We teach from 6 up to any age who would still like to take part in Jiu Jitsu.  Group classes have been structured in accordance with a 6 to 11, 12 to 16 and adult class structure.

With a live Martial Arts there is the risk of injury.  We take every precaution to ensure the safety of our students and try to teach the value of respect for other people. We can’t promise that you’ll never experience any pain or injury, but we can promise take the needed precautions to keep injuries to minimum.

No. The classes will help you get into the kind of shape you need to be in for fighting. You don’t need to be an athlete before coming to the gym.
